The orange festival started in Muravera in the 1960's by the fruit farmers of the region to show off the excellence of the local produce. The Valley of Flumendosa produces fruit of the highest quality on the Island.
Oranges were introduced to the Muravera area during the period of Spanish domination of Sardinia. Among the varieties grown one will find: blond oranges, vanilla oranges, the common rosy orange, as well as the fragrant Sardinian mandarin, all grafted on melangolo or Seville a bitter orange.
The three day orange festival includes local art exhibitons, people dressed in traditional costumes, horse drawn carriages and musical concerts as well as lots of orange juice and a mountain of oranges!
