A constant source of frustration, the train service in Sardinia, is generally slow and will involve changing trains, and long waitsbetween connections. This narrow guage railway was built at the end of the 19th century by the Kings of Savoy to connect the inland agricultural regions and mining communities to with the island's main ports.

This train runs on single gauge tracks and passes through some of the most beautiful countrside on the island and is known as “the train in the wilderness” Tickets can be bought at any of the stations on the route or on the train itself. It is also possible to book original model locomotive: a steam engine with wooden wagons that will make you feel like you’re stepping back into the 19th century.In exceptional cases the old Fiat 509 (1929) that was used for inspections along the track can be hired.
